Volunteer Requirements

The typical minimum age for sorting food is fourteen years old, but exceptions are made for supervised groups (e.g. Girl and Boy Scout Troops and school groups). Volunteers under 18 years of age in the food sorting area must be accompanied by an adult. Office work is available to volunteers sixteen years and older. Volunteer hours are Monday - Friday between 9 A. M. and 4 P.M. Saturday workdays may be scheduled to accommodate larger groups.

Last year volunteers donated more than 18,000 hours at the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank, assisting us with duties that included sorting food, public speaking, event planning, fundraising, branding, management consulting, and financial training to agency members and food recipients.

Whether you're an individual looking for a way to give back, or your with a group that wants to spend some quality time together, the Food Bank can use your help! Listen to what some recent volunteers, and our Director of Volunteer Services, Harry VanGuilder has to say about our volunteers.
